How The Pelle Leather Care Products Work

Pelle produce a leather care system called the "Pelle Master Kit" consisting of 2 main products (amongst other goodies!):

Here's how it works . . .

First, the leather is thoroughly cleaned with the leather cleaner which has been specially formulated to remove all the dirt, contamination and other foreign chemicals, without harming your leather finish in any way. Next, the condition/protector is applied. This is a combination of special tanners waxes and conditioners designed to do 2 very important things:

Now, it's important to realise, this protection will last for between 4 to 6 months, because it will eventually wear off . . . and that's the whole point . . . because when you clean your leather again (it should be cleaned every 4 to 6 months), the leather cleaner will strip off the protective film with all the contamination embedded in it . . . leaving your original leather untouched!

Brilliant! So, every time you clean your leather, you MUST reapply the conditioner/protector for maximum benefit.

Here's The Best Part ...

You see, leather upholstery should be able to stand up to normal use without the finish rubbing off. (Unfortunately, most people don't realise that the colour, or the finish on their leather is only a very thin film on the surface. For more on this, have a look at Leather Upholstery )To test the durability of the leather finish, Leather Hides are put through a rub fastness test.

The rub fastness machine rubs a weighted felt pad (approx 1kg) back and forth across the leather. The felt must be able to rub across the leather a certain number of times without damaging the finish.(500 rubs is the industry standard)

Well, LASRA found, when they applied the Pelle Conditioner/Protector over cleaned leather, it took the rub fastness machine TWICE AS LONG to affect the leather as it did to leather NOT protected by the Pelle Protector/Conditioner.

Here's an extract from the LASRA report (ref to RR188):

"When used as directed, the Pelle Leather Care Products improved the wear life of the leather significantly. When pre-treated with the Conditioner/Protector and allowed to dry, the wear life increased and progressively built up a resistance that would be measured by a 100% increase . . . . (etc, etc)"

What this means is, if it takes 500 rubs for the testing equipment to wear through the finish of unprotected leather, it takes 1000 rubs to wear through the finish of leather protected by the Pelle Conditioner/protector!

So you see, DOUBLING the wear life of your leather finish, is easily achieved by simply using the Pelle Leather Care system on a regular basis.

Here's another extract taken directly from the LASRA report . . .

"Results from the controlled tests showed that:

  • Pre-treating the leather with Pelle Conditioner/Protector made the leather more resistant to soiling.
  • Pre-treating the leather also reduced the effect of intensive rubbing on the appearance of the leather.
  • Pre-treating the leather also made removal of any soiling easier.
  • The use of the Pelle Cleaner on the soiled test leather was able to restore the appearance to the original condition.
  • The absence of treatment with the Pelle Conditioner/Protector lead to a build-up of soiling which could not be removed with water alone.
  • Soiling resistance built up with successive use of the Pelle Conditioner/Protector.
  • The tests showed substantial benefit in terms of the Pelle product's ability to prevent soiling and/or remove soiling. Progressive use of the products improved the level of protection even further."

It's important to realise that Leather Upholstery is subject to wear and tear, especially in areas such as seat cushions, and arm rests. And as we've seen, it has a very thin colour film over the surface.

So, it is inevitable that sooner or later, the colour is going to wear through. So the real question is, "Do you want your leather to wear out SOONER, or LATER?".

Now, if you don't mind your leather having a relatively SHORT lifespan and shelling out money for Leather Restoration, or even having it re-upholstered, then that's your choice.
